Tokyo

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) is the capital of Japan and the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is made up of 23 central wards, along with a number of cities, towns, and villages. Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo - once a small town that gradually grew into one of the largest cities in the world. In 1868, the emperor and the capital moved from Kyoto to Edo, and the city was officially renamed Tokyo, meaning “Eastern Capital.” Interestingly, “Tokyo” is also an anagram of “Kyoto.”

Today, Tokyo offers visitors an almost endless variety of shopping, entertainment, culture, and food, alongside many beautiful and accessible green parks right in the heart of the city.
