Miyajima

Miyajima (宮島) is a small island located about an hour from Hiroshima. It is best known for its giant torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide. While its official name is Itsukushima, the island is commonly referred to as Miyajima, meaning “Shrine Island” in Japanese. Like the torii gate, the main shrine buildings are also built over the water.

Similar to Nara, you’ll find friendly wild deer roaming freely around the island, well accustomed to human visitors.
