Hostels in Japan are nothing to be afraid of!
If you’re used to thinking of hostels as something closer to a tent on a school trip - in Japan, things can look very different.
Most hostels in Japan (generally speaking) are high quality: clean, well-maintained, comfortable, and affordable. On my last trip to Japan, I stayed in a hostel in Kyoto that turned out to be one of the best places I stayed at during the trip. The price was a joke, the location was great, and the main differences compared to a hotel were the room size (I stayed in a private room, not a shared dorm) and the fact that you need to pick up towels from the lobby since there’s no room service. Everything else felt like a hotel in every sense.
Here’s an example of a “hostel” I stayed in:

So yes - not all hostels are at this level. But there are quite a few that are.
Those who choose to include good hostels in their trip can enjoy a stay comparable to a 3-star Western hotel, while saving a significant amount of money.
