Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社), known as the “Grand Shrine of Sumiyoshi,” is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. It was founded in the 3rd century, before the introduction of Buddhism, and features a unique architectural style. The Sumiyoshi-zukuri style is characterized by straight roofs, unlike the curved roofs that became common in later periods.
Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head and most famous of more than 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines found across Japan. These shrines enshrine kami (Shinto deities) who protect travelers, fishermen, and sailors, so they are often located near the sea or ports.
