A peaceful corner of nature in the heart of Hiroshima

Shukkeien Garden (縮景園) is a small and enchanting traditional Japanese garden located right in the heart of Hiroshima. It was designed in a style known as a “miniature landscape garden,” meaning that every element - the pond, hills, bridges, and vegetation - was carefully crafted to resemble expansive natural scenery on a refined, smaller scale. The winding paths invite visitors to stroll, pause, observe, and discover a new peaceful view around every corner.
The garden was created in the early 17th century, in 1620, by a local lord named Asano Nagaakira. Its design was inspired by a beautiful lake in China, and it originally served as a place of rest and a traditional tea retreat for his family. Only many years later was it opened to the public.
During the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, the garden suffered severe damage, like much of the city. However, after the war it was carefully restored, and today it is once again open to both locals and visitors. Each season brings a different atmosphere - cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, colorful autumn foliage, and a quiet, serene winter landscape.
It’s a wonderful place to relax, connect with nature, and experience the subtle beauty of Japanese culture.
