Sensoji (浅草寺) is an impressive Buddhist temple located in Asakusa - the historic district of Tokyo. It is one of the most colorful and popular temples in the city. Also known as the “Temple of Kannon,” it is dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy. According to legend, in 628 two brothers found a statue of Kannon in the river. Even after returning it to the water, it kept coming back to them, leading to the construction of the temple nearby. Completed in 645, it is the oldest temple in Tokyo.
A shopping street over 200 meters long, called Nakamise Street, leads from the outer gate to the temple’s inner gate. With a history spanning several centuries, it has a lively and charming atmosphere. Various events take place here throughout the year. The biggest is the Sanja Matsuri, the annual festival of Asakusa Shrine, held in May
