The Philosopher’s Path(哲学の道, Tetsugaku no michi) is a pleasant stone walking path in the northern part of Higashiyama in Kyoto. The path is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season thanks to the hundreds of sakura trees lining the canal, though it’s enjoyable year-round. It stretches for about two kilometers, starting near Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion) and ending at Nanzen-ji Temple.

Why the name? It’s named after Nishida Kitaro, one of Japan’s most famous philosophers, who is said to have practiced meditation while walking this route on his daily commute to Kyoto University. Along the path, you’ll find small cafés, restaurants, and charming temples just a short walk from the canal. One of the highlights is Honen-in Temple, known for its especially beautiful entrance gate during autumn foliage season.
