The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is located in the heart of the city, on what was once a bustling commercial district. The park was established to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombing that took place on August 6, 1945 - the first time nuclear weapons were used in war. Its location was carefully chosen due to its proximity to the hypocenter, with the aim of preserving memory while conveying a message of hope and global peace.

At the center of the park stands the Peace Memorial Museum, which consists of two buildings. The museum tells the story of Hiroshima - what the city was like before the bombing, what happened on that day, and how the city coped in its aftermath. Visitors can view photographs, listen to recordings from survivors, and see personal belongings of the victims - items that powerfully illustrate the scale of destruction and human suffering.

One of the park’s most iconic symbols is the Atomic Bomb Dome - a structure that survived the blast despite being very close to the hypocenter. It has been preserved exactly as it was and is considered an international symbol of the horrors of war. In 1996, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park is also home to many moving memorials, such as the Children’s Peace Monument, built in memory of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who died from radiation after folding a thousand paper cranes in hopes of recovery. Other notable sites include the Peace Flame, which will continue to burn until all nuclear weapons are eliminated, and the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, beneath which lies a stone listing the names of all known victims.

The park welcomes millions of visitors each year - tourists, students, and people from around the world. Every year on August 6, a memorial ceremony is held here. It is a place that bridges past and future, reminding us of the cost of war and encouraging a commitment to a more peaceful world.
