Oyama Shrine

A shrine dedicated to the former ruler of the region

Oyama Shrine

Wikipedia

is one of the more unique spots in Kanazawa. It is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie - the first ruler of the Maeda clan, one of the most powerful and influential families in feudal Japan.

The shrine was originally built on Mount Utatsu, east of the city, back in 1599 by his son, Maeda Toshinaga. It was later moved to its current location in central Kanazawa.

What really makes this place stand out, though, is its entrance gate - unlike any shrine gate you’ve probably seen. It was designed in the late 19th century by a Dutch architect and blends Japanese, Chinese, and European styles.
The lower section features curved lines with an Asian influence, while the upper part includes stained glass, arched windows, and almost Gothic-style decoration. It even once functioned as a lighthouse for Kanazawa’s port.

Within the grounds, you’ll also find a bronze statue of Toshiie standing proudly in the main square, as well as a peaceful Japanese garden with ponds, bridges, rocks, and seasonal plants. Some of the bridges are even shaped like traditional Japanese harps.

If you’re into history, culture, or just a bit of unusual architecture, this is definitely a spot worth stopping by.
