Owakudani was formed during an eruption around 3,000 years ago, the area is still active today, you’ll see steam rising from the ground, smell the sulfur in the air, and walk through a landscape that feels a bit otherworldly.
One of the local traditions here is eating the famous black eggs, boiled in the hot springs, which are said to add a few years to your life (worth a try, right?). It’s one of the most unique stops in Hakone and definitely not your typical nature spot.
