Odawara Castle dates back to the 15th century and became the stronghold of the powerful Hōjō clan, who ruled much of the Kanto region during the Sengoku (warring states) period.
The castle is best known for its role in 1590, when it was besieged by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the key figures who unified Japan. The siege eventually led to the fall of the Hōjō clan and marked a major turning point in Japanese history.
Today, the castle is a reconstruction, but inside you’ll find exhibitions about samurai life, the Hōjō clan, and the castle’s story. The top floor offers wide views over the city, making the climb up worth it.
