Nijo Castle (二条城) was built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period (1603–1867). His grandson completed the palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five-story keep. After the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1867, the castle became a historic site open to the public. It is so well preserved and representative of the era that it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The castle can be divided into three main areas: Honmaru (the main circle of defense), Ninomaru (the secondary circle), and the surrounding gardens. The entire complex is enclosed by stone walls and moats.
Entry is through a large eastern gate. Audio guides in English are available for rent near the entrance. As you continue, you’ll reach the Karamon Gate, which leads into the Ninomaru area - the highlight of the castle.

The Ninomaru Palace served as the shogun’s residence and office during his visits to Kyoto. The palace has been beautifully preserved and consists of several separate buildings connected by corridors featuring “nightingale floors” - wooden floors designed to chirp when stepped on, acting as a security measure against intruders.

Note that entering the interior of Ninomaru Palace requires an additional fee (400 yen). Outside, you’ll find a traditional Japanese garden with a large and beautiful pond. Nijo Castle is also a great spot for cherry blossoms, with over 400 cherry trees planted across the grounds. Thanks to the variety of species, the blooming season here typically lasts from late March through the end of April.
