(妙立寺), also known as the “Ninja Temple” (Ninjadera) - which is a bit ironic, since no ninjas ever lived here - is one of the most intriguing places in Kanazawa.
The temple was built during the Edo period by the Maeda clan, the local rulers. At the time, the shogun (military ruler) prohibited regional lords from constructing military fortifications - so instead, they built a “temple” equipped with highly sophisticated defensive features:
Hidden doors
Staircases leading nowhere
Rooms with secret passageways
Traps designed to confuse intruders
…and more
In reality, the temple functioned as a covert watch post, complete with escape routes, communication paths, and everything needed in case of an attack on Kanazawa Castle - an attack that never actually happened.
Please note: visits are by guided tour only, conducted in Japanese (with advance reservation required), but English guide sheets are available to follow along.
