Lake Kawaguchi (河口湖) is the largest, and arguably the most beautiful and impressive, of the Fuji Five Lakes. It’s easily accessible from Tokyo by direct bus (trains are also possible, usually with a transfer).

Kawaguchiko, the town around the lake, is a charming resort area with a variety of attractions, but the real highlight is the view of Mount Fuji from almost every corner.

When to visit?
Cherry blossom season (around mid-April) and autumn foliage (typically the first half of November) are especially popular. That said, it’s a great destination year-round.

One thing to keep in mind: the area is beautiful regardless - but whether you’ll actually see Mount Fuji depends heavily on the weather. Clouds can completely hide the mountain, sometimes to the point where you wouldn’t even know it’s there
