Lake Ashi is at the heart of Hakone, and it’s where things start to feel a bit more open and scenic.

The lake was formed in a volcanic crater, and today it’s known for its calm water, mountain views, and - on clear days - Mount Fuji in the background. You’ll also spot the famous red torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing by the shore.

Most people experience the lake by taking the pirate ship cruise, which is a fun way to take in the views, but even just walking along the shore for a bit is worth it.
