(兼六園) is one of Japan’s most famous and impressive gardens, and is considered one of the “Three Great Gardens of Japan,” alongside Kairakuen Garden and Korakuen Garden.
If you ask me, it’s definitely beautiful - but calling it one of the top three in Japan? Slightly overrated, in my opinion.
The garden originally served as the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and was developed over nearly 200 years by the Maeda family, the samurai clan that ruled the region.
The name “Kenrokuen” means “Garden of Six Attributes,” referring to six elements that, according to Chinese landscape theory, define the ideal garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, flowing water, and wide views. As you walk through the garden, you’ll see these principles come to life - ponds, streams, bridges, small waterfalls, hidden corners, ancient trees, and traditional teahouses.
The garden changes beautifully with the seasons:
🌸 Spring – plum and cherry blossoms
🌿 Summer – vibrant greenery
🍁 Autumn – red and orange foliage
❄️ Winter – snow-covered landscapes and pine trees supported by traditional ropes (yukitsuri)
