Kegon waterfall (華厳の滝) is the most famous waterfall in the Nikko area and is considered one of the three most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. Standing at nearly 100 meters tall, it serves as the only outlet of Lake Chuzenji.
You can view the falls from a free observation point that’s easily accessible on foot. For a small fee, you can also take an elevator down to a lower observation deck located right at the base of the waterfall - a short ride, but definitely worth it.
Kegon Falls is at its most beautiful in autumn, when the surrounding foliage turns vibrant shades of red and orange (typically from mid to late October). In winter, the falls often freeze almost completely, creating a dramatic and powerful scene.
