Itsukushima Shrine is the main highlight of Miyajima and one of Japan’s most iconic sights.
The shrine was first built in the 12th century and is set over the water, giving it the famous “floating” look during high tide. The large red torii gate standing in the sea is what most people come to see, and it really lives up to it.
At low tide, you can actually walk out toward the gate, which makes the experience feel completely different.
