Ginkakuji

A charming temple - not covered in silver at all

Mr. Japan Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ginkakuji

True Japan

Source:

Ginkakuji (銀閣寺), also known as the “Silver Pavilion,” is a temple located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. In 1482, the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa built it as his retirement villa, intending it to resemble his grandfather’s residence - Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion). After his death, the villa was converted into a Zen temple.

Despite its name, the Silver Pavilion was never actually covered in silver. It’s believed the name was given later to contrast it with the Golden Pavilion - yes, a bit ironic. The temple grounds feature beautiful gardens, including a famous sand garden and a moss garden, as well as several smaller temple structures.

Note that the interior of the pavilion itself is not open to the public. Interestingly, the pavilion is one of only two original buildings in the complex that have survived centuries of fires and earthquakes intact.
