A large retail chain in Japan

is a massive discount retail chain in Japan - think of it as a very Japanese version of a big all-in-one bargain store. As of 2024, it operates over 400 branches across Japan, along with dozens more across Asia.

Inside the stores, you’ll find just about everything - from everyday essentials to electronics and clothing. The chain is widely known in Japan and often referred to by its nickname, Donki (ドンキ). Most branches stay open unusually late by Japanese retail standards (often until 3:00 or 5:00 a.m., with some open 24/7).

The brand’s quirky mascot is called Donpen - a blue penguin wearing a Santa hat, which has become something of a cultural icon in Japan. There’s also a pink female counterpart named Donko.

In December 2022, the company announced plans to “modernize” Donpen with a new design, but after strong public backlash, the idea was scrapped and the original mascot remained.

A completely unnecessary (but important) fact: a very specific song plays on loop in the stores. It’s called “Miracle Shopping,” released as a single in 1999 - and once you hear it, you probably won’t forget it.
