(嵐山) is a pleasant and popular district on the western outskirts of Kyoto. The area is especially popular during cherry blossom season and autumn, though it’s enjoyable to visit year-round. In the area, you’ll find many small shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the famous Tenryu-ji Temple, the beautiful Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and even boats available for rent on a scenic river.
North of central Arashiyama, the atmosphere becomes less touristy and more rural, with several small temples scattered along the base of the forested mountains. If you make it to this area, renting a bicycle is highly recommended. Arashiyama is at its most attractive (and crowded) in early April and the second half of November, when cherry blossoms and autumn foliage typically reach their peak.
