Akihabara (秋葉原), also known as Tokyo’s “geek district,” is a lively and famous area packed with electronics shops. Anime, manga, and tech - you’ll find it all here.

Along the main street, you’ll spot big-name stores like Sofmap and Laox, while the side streets are filled with smaller independent shops. The highlight is the massive Yodobashi Camera complex, an absolute paradise for anyone looking to buy a tablet, smartphone, or camera. It’s so big that there’s even a golf range on the top floor.

Worth noting: some electronics, especially smartphones, can be a bit tricky for tourists. Due to past issues with inappropriate photography, many devices in Japan are required to make a loud shutter sound when taking pictures.

Also, some electronics are designed specifically for use in Japan due to voltage and technical differences. That said, many shops do offer products suitable for international use, and tax-free shopping is widely available for tourists.

In recent decades, Akihabara has also become a hub for Japanese pop culture - packed with stores specializing in anime, manga, retro games, figurines, trading cards, and collectibles.

Beyond shopping, the district is known for its themed cafés, especially “maid cafés,” where staff dress and act as characters, as well as manga cafés where you can read comics and watch related content.
