The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (金沢21世紀美術館, Kanazawa Nijūichiseiki Bijutsukan) opened in 2004, right next to Kenrokuen Garden - one of Japan’s most famous and beautiful gardens.
Inside, you’ll find contemporary art from both Japanese and international artists.
What makes this place stand out is the design - a circular, transparent building with no front or back, meaning there’s no single “main entrance.” The idea is to let visitors approach art from any direction, without one “correct” way.
Inside there are rotating paid exhibitions (usually one or two at a time).
The public areas are free and open to everyone - library, children’s workshops, seating areas, and inner courtyards.
There are also permanent installations along the way, including one of the most famous:
“The Swimming Pool” by Leandro Erlich - which looks like a regular pool at first glance, but has a surprising twist, creating the illusion of people “swimming underwater.” A fun one.
